Auburn is A’burnin’ with Georgia Lottery Winners

Thursday, September 30, 2004

ATLANTA – Lottery fever is blazing through the city of Auburn. Wayne and Pamela Sharpton of Auburn played the Georgia Lottery instant game Vegas Nights and won $350,000. Meanwhile, Auburn’s Jay Donahue won $9,000 playing the instant game 9’s on a Line.

The Sharptons are enjoying the fun of the Vegas strip without the trip! Mrs. Sharpton purchased a Vegas Nights ticket and was shocked to see that she was a $350,000 top prize winner.

The lucky ticket was purchased at Texaco Food Mart, located at 7744 Hwy. 81 SW in Monroe. Mrs. Sharpton returned to the store where she bought the ticket to verify her win. “Well my eyes are playing tricks on me,” she exclaimed. “It can’t be.” Wanting additional confirmation, she visited a second Georgia Lottery retailer and was finally convinced.

Mr. and Mrs. Sharpton plan to pay bills and set aside some of their winnings for their grandchildren. Mrs. Sharpton adds that she hopes to start her own business.

Jay Donahue, 25, was in line for a soft drink when 9’s on a Line caught his eye. He purchased a 9’s on a Line ticket and lined up to collect the game’s $9,000 top prize.

Mr. Donahue purchased his lucky ticket at Carl Superette, located at 1132 Atlanta Hwy. in Auburn. He scratched the ticket in the store’s parking lot. “I started shaking and called a buddy of mine. Of course, he didn’t believe me,” Mr. Donahue laughs.

According to Mr. Donahue, the father of three-year-old twins Brad and Kyle, he will pay bills with his winnings.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $6.8 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs. These include Georgia’s HOPE scholarship program; a statewide, voluntary pre-kindergarten program for four-year-olds; and a wide range of technological and capital upgrades for the state’s schools, technical institutes, colleges, universities and public libraries.
