2012 brings 29-year-old $1M Powerball win

Thursday, January 5, 2012

ATLANTA – For one 29-year-old man, it’s out with the old and in with a newly-minted Georgia Lottery prize for the New Year. Neil Patel won a $1 million Powerball prize from the Dec. 31 drawing.

Patel matched the first five winning numbers, multiplying his winnings when he selected Powerball’s multiplier option.

Winning numbers from the drawing were 5-23-25-28-40 and the Powerball was 34.

Shell Food Mart #0002, 1903 Hamilton Road in LaGrange, sold the lucky Quik Pik.

Patel, who is from Pensacola, Fla., was passing through the state when he stopped.

“I stopped for a Coke and asked for a printout,” he said. “When I saw that those were my numbers, I started shaking and screaming out of control.”

For Patel, the experience seems unreal.

“I woke up on Jan. 1 saying that this would be a good year,” he recalled.

A business strategy consultant, Patel plans to take his time in deciding what to do with his winnings.

“I’ll decide in time. I want to make the right decisions,” he shared. “This will help set myself for the future.”

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $12.9 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
