Portal retirement home manager picks up $1M

Thursday, January 19, 2012

ATLANTA – Winning the lottery is a high point for one Portal woman. Sara Williams, a retirement home manager, has won a $1 million top prize playing the Georgia Lottery’s 50X The Money instant game.

“I was going to get my son from a banquet, and we stopped at the store,” the mother of two said. “I walked in the store and got one.”

Mill Creek #0005, 27199 U.S. Highway 80 W. in Portal, sold the winning ticket. She scratched it at home.

Williams, 42, said she decided to play because she saw a TV advertisement.

“I couldn’t believe it, and I still don’t believe it,” she said.

The lucky lottery winner anticipates purchasing a new video game console for her 18-year-old son.

“But the first thing I plan to do is buy my mama a house,” she shared. “After I get situated, I’ll get some land and fix my house.”

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $13.1 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
