$250K win drives excitement for DeKalb County woman

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

ATLANTA – Donna Cooley of Decatur has won a cool quarter-million dollar prize from the Georgia Lottery just in time for spring. Cooley played the instant game Atlanta Falcons In The House and won a $250,000 top prize.

Shell Food Mart, 2781 E. College Ave. in Decatur, sold the winning ticket. She scratched it in the store.

“I said, ‘I can’t believe this,’ ” she said. “I put my glasses on, looking again, and said, ‘Oh my goodness!’”

The mother of four adult children called her husband, Chuck.

“He said, ‘No kidding! How’d you do it?’ ” she recalled.

The couple is pending retirement, so they anticipate building a new house. They also intend to treat their children to a vacation.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $13.1 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
