ATLANTA – The winner of a $10,000 prize from last week’s record $656 million Mega Millions drawing has come forward. Frances Nelson, 74, claimed her prize Thursday.
“I’m still up on cloud nine,” Nelson said. “I haven’t come down yet.”
Nelson won the prize by matching four of five white balls plus the Mega Ball in the March 30 Mega Millions drawing.
A resident of Southside, Ala., Nelson is a state of Alabama retiree. She and her husband, Oscar, have three daughters, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Nelson said her windfall will help with an upcoming trip to Las Vegas.
“I’m also going to give each of my daughters $1,000,” she said.
Rome Food Mart, located at 2406 Gadsden Road S.W. in Cave Spring, sold the lucky ticket.
Winning numbers from the March 30 Mega Millions drawing were: 2-4-23-38-46 and the Mega Ball was 23.
Nelson was one of 48 Georgia Lottery players to each win $10,000 in the drawing. Six Georgia Lottery players won $250,000 each.
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Mega Millions will benefit education in the state of Georgia. Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $13.1 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
