Gainesville woman wins $100,000 on birthday

ATLANTA – Instead of cake, a Gainesville woman was surprised with cash on her 48th birthday. Renae Smith, who celebrated her special day Sept. 1, won a $100,000 top prize on the Georgia Lottery instant game Cash Harvest.

Smith's husband, Byron, went to Chevron Food Mart, 4325 Browns Bridge Road in Cumming, purchased the ticket and handed it to her at home as a birthday gift.

"My mouth hung open," she said.

The grandmother of five described her special day as "incredible" and plans to pay off bills with a portion of her prize.

"It was already a wonderful day," she shared. "This just put it over the top."

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $11 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program. More than 1.1 million students have received HOPE, and more than 940,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
