ATLANTA – Just two months after retiring from The Home Depot, a Bloomingdale man is celebrating a quarter-million dollar Georgia Lottery win. Michael Gibbens, 64, matched the first five winning numbers in the Sept. 18 Mega Millions drawing and won the game's $250,000 second prize. "This is definitely going to help take care of us for the rest of our lives," Gibbens said. He surprised his wife, Gennie, with the news by asking her, "How would you like to pay off the house?" Gibbens purchased his Quik Pik ticket at 1780 Country Store, 2991 Highway 80, Bloomingdale. A Statesboro store also sold a $250,000 winning ticket for the Sept. 18 Mega Millions drawing. Winning numbers for the drawing were: 18-27-31-36-52 and the Mega Ball was 33. The lottery win comes at a great time for Gibbens, who also retired from the U.S. Army in 1978. "I'm going to pay every bill we've got and put the rest in the bank," he said. After thinking for a second, he quickly added, "Oh, I'm going to buy a new lawnmower too." As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Mega Millions will benefit education in the state of Georgia. Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $11 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program. More than 1.1 million students have received HOPE, and more than 940,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program. Play Responsibly – It's All About Fun!
