Georgia Lottery president elected to lead international lottery organization

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

ATLANTA – Georgia Lottery Corp. President and CEO Margaret DeFrancisco has been named president of the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL). Margaret was selected by her peers during last week's NASPL '09 Annual Conference.

"Leading NASPL is a tremendous honor and responsibility," said DeFrancisco, who will serve a one-year term in addition to her current role at the Georgia Lottery. "We are at a crossroads in the industry with lotteries around the country and the world facing the growing challenges to increase profits for beneficiary programs. To ensure future growth and success as an industry, we must collaborate and progress with innovative ideas and forward thinking."

Under DeFrancisco's leadership, the Georgia Lottery is the only traditional lottery in the U.S. to experience 11 consecutive years of growth in profits.

One of DeFrancisco's goals as NASPL president is to implement the monumental agreement to cross-sell Mega Millions and Powerball in all U.S. lottery jurisdictions.

"With each new year, the NASPL staff has the honor of working with a lottery CEO who serves as president of the Association," said NASPL Executive Director David Gale. "This year, Margaret DeFrancisco will continue the work necessary to move this Association forward. Margaret brings not only a great deal of experience to the office, but also a tremendous amount of knowledge necessary for these changing economic times. We look forward to working with her in the coming year."

Founded in 1971, NASPL represents 52 lottery organizations.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $11 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program. More than 1.1 million students have received HOPE, and more than 940,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
