ATLANTA – An MBA student from Atlanta is celebrating a quarter-million dollar Georgia Lottery win. John Haley, 24, matched the first five winning numbers in the Dec. 18 Mega Millions drawing and won the game's $250,000 second prize.
"I was just kind of in shock," said Haley, who claimed his prize Monday.
Haley discovered he won when a friend checked the draw results on the Internet from a cell phone.
Winning numbers for the drawing were: 10-20-30-44-49 and the Mega Ball was 24. Haley purchased his Quik Pik ticket at 96 Travel Plaza, located at 5220 Ga. Highway 96 W. in Jeffersonville.
According to Haley, he's going to take some time to think about how to use his winnings.
"I'm going to put it in the bank," he said. "Nothing too brash. I'll just see where it takes me."
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Mega Millions will benefit education in the state of Georgia.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $11.2 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program. More than 1.2 million students have received HOPE, and more than 940,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
