Retired accountant banks $250,000 Mega Millions win

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

ATLANTA – A retired accountant has tapped a quarter-million dollar Georgia Lottery prize. Larry Nolan, 72, won a $250,000 second prize from matching the first five winning numbers in the April 9 Mega Millions drawing.

Mitt’s Food Mart, 2001 W. Hill Ave. in Valdosta, sold the winning Quik Pik ticket. Winning numbers from the April 9 Mega Millions drawing were: 15-18-39-48-53 and the Mega Ball was 3.

A resident of Florence, Ky., Nolan said he was traveling through Georgia when he stopped for gas and purchased the Quik Pik ticket. He checked the Georgia Lottery’s Web site where he discovered his win.

“I went over it again, and there it was,” he said. “I showed it to my wife, and she didn’t believe me.”

Nolan and his wife, Patty, have six adult children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The couple plan to pay off their home mortgage.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $11.4 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.2 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
