Putney man wins ‘jumbo’ $50,000 lottery prize

Thursday, April 15, 2010

ATLANTA – A Putney man is celebrating a lottery win. Roy Layfield, 66, won a $50,000 top prize playing Jumbo Bucks Classic, a Georgia Lottery instant game.

The lucky lottery winner said he always feels lucky, especially when he purchased the winning ticket at Family Pantry, 4323 Radium Springs Road in Putney. He scratched it in the car.

“I looked at my brother and said, ‘You won’t believe what I’ve scratched off,’ ” he recalled. “We were just riding around when we stopped.”

Retired nine years, Layfield and his wife, Carol, have two adult children.

He plans to save his winnings.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $11.4 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.2 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
