Truck driver hauls off $40,000 lottery win in Rome

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

ATLANTA – A truck driver traveling through Rome has landed a Georgia Lottery prize. William Pate won a $40,000 top prize playing the instant game 10X The Money.

Pate, a resident of Gordo, Ala., stopped at Highway 411 Truckstop, 145 Highway 411 S.E. in Rome, and purchased a ticket. He scratched it in the store.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “The guy that runs the store was more excited than I was.”

Pate, 58, said he feels good about his windfall but has yet to make any plans.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $11.7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.2 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
