Cherry picking: Dallas grandmother of 6 wins $30,000

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

ATLANTA – A Dallas grandmother of six was happy to harvest a $30,000 Georgia Lottery prize. Jerry Cook, 53, played the instant game Cherry Twist and won a top prize.

Nitro Shell, 3491 Atlanta Highway in Hiram, sold the winning ticket where Cook scratched it.

“I was jumping up and down, and I let out one or two squeals,” she said. “I had really big eyes and a really big mouth that just dropped to the floor.”

In addition to her six grandchildren, Cook has two adult children with her husband, Al. She specializes in the fire and water restoration of burnt homes.

The lucky lottery winner has no immediate plans for her lottery win.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $11.7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.2 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
