ATLANTA – A Chatsworth construction worker has hoisted a monumental Georgia Lottery prize. Billy Woods, 70, won a $1 million prize playing the instant game Extreme Green.
“I was leaving work, and I stopped for gas and a ticket,” he said.
A construction worker 47 years, Woods purchased his winning ticket at Kangaroo Express #3523, 1010 E. Walnut Ave. in Dalton. He scratched it in his truck outside of the store.
“I went back in, and the clerk high-fived me,” he said. “I was shaking.”
Woods, with his wife, Ruth, has two adult children and four grandchildren. His son attended Reinhardt College as a recipient of the lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship.
“It’s a good program, and it’s well worth it,” he shared.
With his prize, Woods said he intends to travel.
“I’m great,” he exclaimed.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $11.7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.2 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
