ATLANTA – For more than a month a Decatur woman unknowingly has carried with her a winning ticket from the Georgia Lottery. Juanita Starr, 66, matched all five numbers in the June 1 Fantasy 5 drawing from a free Quik Pik ticket, winning the $879,058 jackpot prize.
Starr claimed her prize Monday at Georgia Lottery headquarters in downtown Atlanta after discovering it while cleaning out her purse.
“I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I didn’t know I had won.”
Winning numbers from the June 1 Fantasy 5 drawing were: 2-9-10-30-39.
Starr received her free ticket from a previous drawing at Kimia’s Mart, 3639 Flat Shoals Road in Decatur.
Distractions, Starr explained, kept her from checking her ticket.
“My phone would keep ringing, and I just didn’t have time,” said the mother of three adult sons, who watched the televised drawing. “I remember saying, ‘These are funny-looking numbers. I know this can’t be a winner.’”
With her newfound windfall, Starr anticipates planning for her future.
“I want to buy a house – something affordable,” she shared. “I want to maintain (this prize) with good decisions on everything that I do with it.”
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $13.6 billion to the state of Georgia for education.
