Energy boost: 2 Atlantans grab $250K Mega Millions win

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

ATLANTA – Following a stop for an energy drink, two Atlanta residents have blended energy and excitement with a quarter-million dollar prize courtesy of the Georgia Lottery. Matthew Ritterbeck and Ryan Tatman matched the first five numbers from the Sept. 21 Mega Millions drawing, winning a $250,000 prize.

Ritterbeck, 35; and Tatman, 38, each claimed a share of their prize Monday at Georgia Lottery headquarters in Atlanta.

Texaco Food Mart, 1888 Peachtree Road in Atlanta, sold the lucky Quik Pik ticket.

Winning numbers from the Sept. 21 drawing were: 3-13-14-46-55 and the Mega Ball was 34.

Ritterbeck, a nurse, said he was leaving work when he stopped for an energy drink.

He discovered the good news the following day while checking the results from the drawing on his computer.

“I started screaming,” recalled Ritterbeck, who said a concerned Tatman and his parents came to his aid. “They all thought I was kidding.”

Tatman, an account executive, said he “squealed” upon the discovery.

“(Winning) doesn’t happen the way you think it would,” Tatman explained.

Ritterbeck and Tatman anticipate “having fun” with a portion of their lottery win, and they intend to invest and pay off their home mortgage.

Tuesday’s Mega Millions jackpot drawing is at an estimated $14 million to a single annuity winner. Tickets are $1 per play. Players can multiply prizes with the Megaplier option for an additional $1 per play.

As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Mega Millions will benefit education in the state of Georgia.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $13.6 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.2 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
