Georgia Lottery reaches $14 billion mark for education with record first half

Thursday, January 17, 2013

ATLANTA – Georgia Lottery Corp. officials today announced record profits for the first half of fiscal year 2013. The Georgia Lottery’s first-half transfers to the Lottery for Education Account will bring the total raised for educational programs in the state to more than $14 billion since the lottery’s inception in 1993.

Georgia Lottery profits for the first half of fiscal year 2013 reached a record $450,483,000, more than $31.9 million ahead of the same period last year.

“Our fiscal year is off to a strong start, which is important for the lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship and Pre-K programs,” said Georgia Lottery President and CEO Debbie D. Alford. “We are committed to our mission of maximizing dollars for HOPE and Pre-K, knowing that Georgia’s students and families are the ultimate winners.”

The first half of the Georgia Lottery’s fiscal year spanned from July 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012.

Georgia Lottery profits received a strong boost from the record $587.5 million Powerball jackpot in November.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $14 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.2 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
