Jasper man falls in love with $28K Valentine’s win

Thursday, February 14, 2013

ATLANTA – A Jasper man is lucky and in love with a Valentine’s Day prize from the Georgia Lottery. James Payne, a construction worker, won a $28,888 top prize playing the instant game White Ice 8’s.

“It was just one of those days,” said Payne, 65. “I’d won $8, and then I went into the store and got this.”

The lucky winner claimed his prize Thursday at the Georgia Lottery’s District Office in Dalton.

Mountain Express #0090, 1757 Highway 53 W. in Jasper, sold the winning ticket.

“I looked at the ticket 15 times,” Payne said. “I shared the news with my wife, and she didn’t believe me.”

Married 41 years, the lucky winner and his wife, Jan, have two adult children.

“Valentine’s Day means a whole lot,” Payne said. “I’m going to buy my wife a new stove and refrigerator.”

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $14 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.2 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
