ATLANTA – The Georgia Lottery Corp. continues to make history, ending fiscal year 2010 as the only traditional U.S. lottery to experience 12 consecutive years of growth in profits. The Georgia Lottery’s fiscal year 2010 profits transferred to the State Treasury’s Lottery for Education Account will total $883,878,000, more than $11.7 million ahead of last fiscal year.
“In light of challenges presented by the current economic climate, it is satisfying to see such positive results,” said Georgia Lottery President and CEO Margaret DeFrancisco. “We remain focused on our mission to maximize profits for HOPE Scholarships and Pre-K. We are incredibly proud and grateful that we were able to sustain growth and raise more dollars for these important educational programs.”
Georgia Lottery sales for fiscal year 2010, which spanned from July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010, were $3,645,396,970.
The Georgia Lottery introduced new games and innovative promotions, leveraging corporate partnerships to implement several initiatives, including an Atlanta Falcons-themed instant game and a flashmob at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to introduce Powerball.
Draw games and instant games performed well in fiscal year 2010 with a strong boost from the addition of Powerball to the lottery’s product mix.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $11.7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.2 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
