Barrow County man lines up $80K crossword prize

Monday, August 19, 2013

ATLANTA – A Barrow County man has lined up a Georgia Lottery prize from a crossword puzzle, piecing together a win worth thousands. Brenton Cook of Statham played the instant game Cherry, Orange & Lemon Doubler Cashword and won an $80,000 top prize.

“I got the big winner,” exclaimed Cook, 39. “I couldn’t believe it. I looked at it 10 times.”

Shell, 10 Patrick Mill Road S.W. in Winder, sold the winning ticket.

“I’m still a little shocked,” Cook said.

Cook, who works at an auto auction, and his wife, Christina, have two teenagers, ages 16 and 13.

The lucky winner intends to pay off bills with the winnings.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $14.6 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.6 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.2 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
