ATLANTA – A great-grandfather of three has won a Mega Millions prize. Cecil Hicks has won a $40,000 prize from the Aug. 27 Mega Millions drawing. Hicks of Gadsden, Ala., matched the first four winning numbers to clinch the prize.
Hicks, 71, multiplied his winnings with the Megaplier option for an additional $1 that increased his prize to $40,000. He claimed it at the Georgia Lottery District Office in Dalton Aug. 28.
Slaughter’s Grocery, 1280 Shiloh Road in Cedartown, sold the winning Quik Pik ticket.
“It is exciting, so much so that we couldn’t sleep,” Hicks said.
The lucky winner is retired from an Army depot and has five children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren with his wife, Frances.
“I’m going to pay off the new refrigerator we just bought and bank some of it,” Hicks shared.
Winning numbers from the Aug. 27 Mega Millions drawing were: 4-7-30-36-38 and the Mega Ball was 38.
Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot drawing is at an estimated $95 million to a single annuity winner.
Tickets are $1 per play. Players can add the Megaplier option for an additional $1 per play to multiply non-jackpot prize winnings.
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Mega Millions will benefit education in the state of Georgia.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $14.6 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.6 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.2 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
