Douglasville man draws $3M prize

Monday, March 3, 2014

ATLANTA – A solid Georgia Lottery top prize has emerged for one lucky man in Douglasville. Maurice Matthews, 64, played the instant game 100X The Money and won a $3 million top prize.

Matthews and his wife claimed the prize Feb. 24 at Georgia Lottery headquarters in Atlanta.

The lucky winner believes that he received such a large windfall because of his activism in the community.

“You give respect, and you get it back,” said Matthews, who is retired from the U.S. Air Force.

CITGO Food Mart, 2805 Lee Road in Lithia Springs, sold the winning ticket.

With his winnings, Matthews anticipates paying off his home mortgage and saving the remainder.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $15 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.6 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.3 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
