$500K windfall emerges for Dalton great-grandmother

Friday, May 2, 2014

ATLANTA – A half-million dollar prize has shaped up for one lucky Murray County great-grandmother. Joyce Tankersley, 54, of Dalton has won a $500,000 top prize playing the new Georgia Lottery instant game Stacks of Green.

Country Junction, 2035 Smyrna Church Road in Chatsworth, is the store that sold the winning ticket.

Tankersley scratched the ticket in her truck while in the store’s parking lot.

“I asked the clerk, ‘Can you tell me if I’m seeing this right,’” she recalled. “I couldn’t believe it, but it feels pretty good.”

The great-grandmother of one has eight grandchildren and three adult children with her husband, Charles.

“I may try to find a new home,” Tankersley said on plans for her winnings.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $15.3 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.6 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.3 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
