ATLANTA – William George has been enjoying his favorite hobby of fishing since he retired from a textile company three weeks ago. Now Mr. George has a million new ways to enjoy his retirement. He played $200 Million Cash Spectacular, a new Georgia Lottery instant game, and won the $1,000,000 top prize.
Mr. George’s wife, Jackie, scratched the ticket while they were in the store. “She said, ‘I think I won $1,000,’” Mr. George recounts. “Then she kept scratching and saw more zeroes.”
The West Point resident considers himself to be a lucky man, but the news of his lottery win left him speechless. “I didn’t know what to do or say,” Mr. George explains.
Mr. George, 55, plans to use his winnings to pay bills. He and his wife are the parents of 10 children, including a daughter who attended West Georgia Technical College in LaGrange using the HOPE scholarship.
Jr. Food Mart, located at 1616 Whitesville Rd. in LaGrange, sold the winning ticket.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $7.6 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs. These include Georgia’s HOPE scholarship program; a statewide, voluntary pre-kindergarten program for four-year-olds; and a wide range of technological and capital upgrades for the state’s schools, technical institutes, colleges, universities and public libraries.
