ATLANTA – A retired high school teacher is celebrating a Fantasy 5 win with a ticket purchased at a store where someone just won $2.5 million. Clois Herndon of Augusta matched all five winning numbers in the Feb. 17 Fantasy 5 drawing and won the $193,038 top prize.
Station House, located at 2419 Peach Orchard Rd. in Augusta, sold the lucky ticket. Station House is the same store where Hephzibah’s Jesse Green won the $2.5 million top prize on the instant game $300 Million Gold Rush.
According to Mr. Herndon, he was in the store purchasing his Fantasy 5 ticket when Mr. Green won.
The winning numbers for the Feb. 17 Fantasy 5 drawing were: 5-16-18-32-35. Mr. Herndon was shocked to see his Quik Pik combination in the newspaper and quickly verified the draw results on the Georgia Lottery Corporation’s Web site.
Mr. Herndon, 71, says that he will do some home improvements, pay bills and share his winnings with his family. He and his wife Mary have four children.
Mr. Herndon has a grandson attending Georgia Southern University in Statesboro on a HOPE Scholarship and says, “Being a former educator, I look at purchasing a Georgia Lottery ticket like I’m sending a student to college.”
Georgia Lottery retailers selling winning Fantasy 5 tickets receive a retailer incentive bonus of $2,000. The retailer incentive bonus increases by $2,000 each time Fantasy 5 rolls. If more than one winning top prize ticket is sold, the retailers selling the top prize winning tickets will share the bonus. Station House will receive a retailer incentive bonus of $10,000.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $8 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Prekindergarten Program. More than 900,000 students have received HOPE Scholarships, and more than 700,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
