ATLANTA – It was business as usual for a nail salon owner who kept giving a manicure after learning that she won a $4 million Georgia Lottery jackpot. Janice Davis matched all six numbers in the Jan. 18 Lotto South drawing and won the jackpot prize.
Mrs. Davis was at work almost a week after the drawing when she remembered her ticket of randomly selected numbers. She was on the phone with her son, Sean, and asked him to check the draw results on the Georgia Lottery Web site. “We went over the numbers on the phone,” she recalls. “We were double- and triple-checking.”
According to Mrs. Davis, she was too shocked to react to the news. “I was just stunned. I was working on a client and she said, ‘How are you still filing my nails?’ ”
Mrs. Davis, 54, has been married to her husband, Joe, for 36 years. “I’m lucky in a lot of ways,” she shares. “I have a wonderful son and two wonderful grandchildren. I get to go to work everyday and work with nice people.”
Mrs. Davis, a resident of Spartanburg, S.C., says she will use her winnings to help her family. She does plan to treat herself to something special – an ice machine. “I just love crushed ice,” she says. “I’ve always wanted an ice machine.”
The winning numbers for the Lotto South drawing on Jan. 18 were: 9-19-22-30-38-46. Dad’s Restaurant #0002, located at 5061 Whitworth Rd. in Lavonia, sold the winning ticket.
Retailers are also winners with the retailer incentive bonus. Any Georgia Lottery retailer who sells a winning Lotto South jackpot ticket can earn the $25,000 retailer incentive bonus. If more than one winning jackpot ticket is sold in Georgia, the retailers selling the winning tickets will share the $25,000 retailer bonus. Dad’s will receive a $25,000 retailer incentive bonus.
The last Lotto South drawing was held on Feb. 25 as the Georgia Lottery Corporation rolled out the new game Win for Life. Win for Life is a $1 game offering lower odds, more winners, and lifetime security with a top prize of $1,000 a week for life. Win for Life tickets went on sale on Feb. 26. The first Win for Life drawing will be held on Wednesday, March 1. Win for Life drawings will be held every Wednesday and Saturday at 11:00 p.m.
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Lotto South and Win for Life sales will benefit education in the state of Georgia.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $8 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Prekindergarten Program. More than 900,000 students have received HOPE Scholarships, and more than 700,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
