Decatur Electrician Shocked to Win Over $464,000 Playing Fantasy 5

Wednesday, December 10, 2003

ATLANTA – A Decatur electrician received quite a shock when he became a Fantasy 5 top prize winner. Larry Blackwell matched all five winning numbers in the Nov. 23 Fantasy 5 drawing and won $464,268.

Mr. Blackwell, 56, watched the drawing and wrote down the winning numbers. He compared his ticket to the results but called the Georgia Lottery Corporation’s Player Information Hotline for confirmation of the news. “I called about 50 more times before I told my wife,” Mr. Blackwell says.

Meanwhile, Brenda, his wife of 34 years, was awakened by Mr. Blackwell’s celebration. “I heard something upstairs booming around, and I said, ‘What is going on?’”

Upon investigating the noise, she learned of her husband’s exciting win. Mrs. Blackwell also called the Georgia Lottery hotline several times to confirm the news.

The Blackwells are still deciding how to use their winnings. “We’ll pay off some bills, and then we’ll go from there,” says Mr. Blackwell.

The winning numbers for the Nov. 23 Fantasy 5 drawing were: 10-21-22-27-29. The lucky Quik Pik ticket was purchased at Warda Food Mart, located at 2560 Flat Shoals Rd. in Decatur.

Georgia Lottery retailers selling winning Fantasy 5 tickets receive a retailer incentive bonus of $2,000. The retailer incentive bonus increases by $2,000 each time Fantasy 5 rolls. If more than one winning top prize ticket is sold, the retailers selling the top prize winning tickets will share the retailer incentive bonus. Warda Food Mart will receive a $12,000 retailer incentive bonus.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $6 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs. These include Georgia’s HOPE scholarship program; a statewide, voluntary pre-kindergarten program for four-year-olds; and a wide range of technological and capital upgrades for the state’s schools, technical institutes, colleges, universities and public libraries.
