Painter sees green with $250,000 lottery win

Thursday, December 14, 2006

ATLANTA – It's the most wonderful time of the year for Max Williams. He played the Georgia Lottery instant game $150,000,000 Slots of Luck and won one of the $250,000 top prizes.

"Woo!" Williams, 50, exclaimed while claiming his prize Thursday at the Georgia Lottery's Columbus District Office. "Can you believe that?"

Williams, who owns a painting company, is married with two children and one grandchild. He purchased his winning ticket at 30th Avenue Package Store, located at 3001 Victory Dr. in Columbus.

According to Williams, a resident of Phenix City, Ala., he plans to pay off his home, help family and friends, and take his wife on a Caribbean cruise.

"It's just unbelievable," he said. "It hasn't sunk in yet."

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $8.6 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Prekindergarten Program. More than 900,000 students have received HOPE Scholarships, and more than 700,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
