Mother and son win $5M on Georgia's $500 Million Club

Thursday, February 22, 2007

ATLANTA – A mother and son are the first to win a $5 million top prize on the Georgia Lottery instant game Georgia's $500 Million Club. Connie Habeck of Gray and Robert Habeck of Athens claimed their winnings Thursday as the partnership Habeck & Habeck.

"Some people at work played and won some money on this game, so I thought I'd give it a chance," Mrs. Habeck said.

She purchased the lucky ticket at Neal's Food Mart #0002, located at 1980 Gray Hwy. in Macon.

"I scratched the ticket at home," Mrs. Habeck described. "I saw a five, then an M, and then I started dialing my son's phone number."

Mr. Habeck was stunned to get the news.

"She called me and said, 'I think we just won $5 million.' It's kind of unreal," he said.

Mr. Habeck, a 35-year-old musician, is married with two children. He plans to purchase a new home and save for his retirement.

Mrs. Habeck, 60, works as a secretary for a plumbing company. She plans to retire and will purchase a new home.

"I've always wanted a basement," she shared. "I'm going to get a house with a basement."

Georgia's $500 Million Club tickets went on sale statewide Jan. 30. The game offers over $500 million in total cash prizes including 10 top prizes of $5 million, 40 prizes of $1 million, and an extra grand prize of $10 million. The game also offers over 81,900 prizes from $500 to $50,000 and over 3.8 million prizes from $40 to $200.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $8.8 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Prekindergarten Program. More than 1 million students have received HOPE, and more than 790,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
