ATLANTA – The New Year is off to a sweet start for Dan Lewis, a cookie company maintenance mechanic. Mr. Lewis matched the first five winning numbers in the Dec. 28 Mega Millions drawing and won $175,000.
The lucky Quik Pik ticket was purchased at Shell Food Mart, located at 1066 Hwy. 100 S. in Tallapoosa. The winning numbers for the Dec. 28 Mega Millions drawing were: 18-29-32-38-43 and the Gold Mega Ball was 50.
Mr. Lewis was on the telephone with his wife, Becky, when he checked the Georgia Lottery Corporation’s Web site a week after the drawing. Mrs. Lewis shares that as her husband viewed each number, “You could just hear him getting more and more excited.”
According to Mr. Lewis, he asked three coworkers to look at the ticket for confirmation. “Within about 15 to 20 minutes, everybody heard,” says Mr. Lewis. “The whole plant was just bubbling with excitement.”
Mr. Lewis, a resident of Cold Springs, Ala., works at Bud’s Best Cookies in Hoover, Ala. He is still thinking about how to spend his winnings but says that he will pay some bills.
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Mega Millions will benefit education in the state of Georgia. Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs. These include Georgia’s HOPE scholarship program; a statewide, voluntary pre-kindergarten program for four-year-olds; and a wide range of technological and capital upgrades for the state’s schools, technical institutes, colleges, universities and public libraries.
