ATLANTA – Carolyn Mitchell of Marietta will have one million reasons to celebrate when her birthday rolls around on Valentine’s Day. Just days before her birthday, Ms. Mitchell won $1 million playing the new Georgia Lottery instant game $100 Million Cash Spectacular.
“It’s a birthday present!” exclaims Ms. Mitchell, who will turn 55 on Feb. 14.
Ms. Mitchell was visiting a friend in Calhoun when she purchased the lucky ticket in Resaca. ABC Convenience Store, located at 4095 Chatsworth Hwy. 225 S.E. in Resaca, sold the lucky ticket.
According to Ms. Mitchell, she scratched the ticket in her car while still in the store’s parking lot. She says that she wasn’t wearing her eyeglasses and thought that she won $100,000. “I didn’t have my glasses,” she says laughing. “I can’t see anything without my glasses.”
When Ms. Mitchell returned to the store to confirm her win, she discovered that she actually won $1 million.
Ms. Mitchell, who works in district support for H&R Block, says that she plans to save most of her winnings. She will use a portion as a down payment on a new home.
$100 Million Cash Spectacular offers 10 $1 million top prizes and over $118 million in additional cash prizes, providing the highest payout percentage in Georgia Lottery history. Tickets went on sale on Tuesday, Feb. 1. To date, two $1 million prizes have been claimed.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs. These include Georgia’s HOPE scholarship program; a statewide, voluntary pre-kindergarten program for four-year-olds; and a wide range of technological and capital upgrades for the state’s schools, technical institutes, colleges, universities and public libraries.
