School’s out: Substitute teacher packs $1M Powerball prize

Friday, May 23, 2014

ATLANTA – One lucky substitute teacher has achieved winning an outstanding Georgia Lottery prize just in time for summer break. George Rhodes, 70, won a $1 million Powerball prize from matching the first five winning numbers from the May 17 drawing.

Riverside Travel Center, 3946 Lower River Road in Blakely, sold the winning ticket.

Rhodes, who lives in Dothan, Ala., claimed his prize Thursday at the Georgia Lottery District Office in Columbus.

Winning numbers from the May 17 Powerball drawing were: 23-32-39-47-49 and the Powerball was 22.

The lucky winner used a combination of his own numbers, which had no significance.

“I put my numbers in the Ticket Checker, and the store owner took me to the back and told me I’d won,” Rhodes explained. “My wife, who was with me, couldn’t believe it. I feel pretty good.”

Married 50 years, Rhodes and his wife have adult children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

With his winnings, Rhodes anticipates buying a “dream home” for his wife.

“She’s been looking at this and looking at that,” he shared.

The Powerball jackpot for Saturday’s drawing is at an estimated $132 million to a single annuity winner.

As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Powerball will benefit education in the state of Georgia.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $15.3 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.6 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.3 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
