ATLANTA – The Georgia Lottery Corporation has announced that 1 million students have benefited from Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program. Gov. Sonny Perdue, former Gov. Zell Miller and Georgia Lottery Corporation President and CEO Margaret DeFrancisco celebrated the significant milestone at Georgia State University Thursday.
"We are committed to our mission of maximizing dollars for lottery-funded educational programs," DeFrancisco said. "Reaching the milestone of one million HOPE recipients is an achievement that all Georgians can celebrate."
Three Georgia students were on hand at the announcement to represent HOPE programs – John Thomas Smith of Georgia State University, Marilyn Findley of Albany Technical College and Tiffany Tuders of Brenau University.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $8.8 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Prekindergarten Program. More than 1 million students have received HOPE, and more than 790,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
