ATLANTA – Aurelia Washington of Augusta is excited about winning the lottery. She played the Georgia Lottery instant game Mega Bucks and won a $50,000 top prize.
Discount Stop Food Mart, 545 Sandbar Ferry Road in Augusta, sold the winning ticket.
"I almost fainted," said Washington, 78. "I felt that I was lucky. I called my daughter, and she hollered too."
A retired housekeeper, Washington has six children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She plans to buy a new car for herself and will help one of her granddaughters through college.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $9.5 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Prekindergarten Program. More than 1 million students have received HOPE, and more than 850,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
