ATLANTA – A $1 million win has evoked good tidings and cheer for one Marietta great-grandfather. Herbert Thompson, 67, won his prize by matching the first five winning numbers in the Dec. 11 Powerball drawing. Because he selected the Power Play option for an additional $1, his winnings increased from $200,000 to $1 million.
“The money is going to go to helping people,” he said. “I can pay my bills, and I’m not hurting for anything.”
Winning numbers from the Dec. 11 drawing were: 1-8-10-19-20 and the Powerball was 23.
Chevron Food Mart, 1023 Sandy Plains Road in Marietta, sold the winning Quik Pik ticket.
Thompson watched the televised drawing as his winning numbers were drawn.
“When I saw that I’d won, I almost passed out,” the lucky lottery winner said. “I looked at it again and couldn’t believe it.”
Retired from construction, Thompson has two adult children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is expecting a third great-grandchild next year.
“My kids and grandkids will among those who get the first slice,” he exclaimed.
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Powerball will benefit education in the state of Georgia.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $12.1 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.25 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
