ATLANTA – The five-member rock band theKey has found passion in playing the percussion and gusto in the guitar. Two of its members turned lovebirds, Clay and Rachel Scott, have found love.
Clay is lead vocalist of the band and Rachel is the keyboardist. With members Jonathan Wisdom, Ryan Cunningham and Josh Harnevious, the band from Macon is competing as top 12 finalists in the Georgia Lottery’s All Access Music Search.
Auditions were held in Atlanta, Columbus, Macon and Savannah with three finalists in the categories of country, rock, pop/R&B and hip-hop/rap.
When the two met at Mercer University, Clay, 23, was looking for a keyboardist for the band.
“We met in August 2006 and started dating spring 2007,” said Rachel, 23. “I became a part of the group in 2007.”
Musically, theKey has a sound that embraces the modern music scene while adding its own flavor reminiscent of the 1990s, according to guitarist Jonathan Wisdom, 22.
“I love how the five members of the band can bring our own ideas and input to create something that is far better than any individual can create on their own,” he said.
For Scott, theKey is more than just making good music but about embracing long-lasting friendships. Clay and Rachel married last January.
“I love that we’re all best friends, and we all hang out together,” says Scott, a senior at Mercer University who also is a Georgia Lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship recipient.
As finalists, theKey performed during the halftime of the Nov. 28 Atlanta Falcons game at the Georgia Dome.
Country finalists are: Julie Gribble (Atlanta); Hannah Thomas (Covington); and Jessi Scott (LaGrange). Rock finalists are: Rusted Soul (Atlanta); theKey (Macon); and Three Quarter Ale (Atlanta). Pop/R&B finalists are: Xavier Lewis (Loganville); PHILLIPPIA (Lawrenceville); and Amber Bri Oliver (Columbus). Hip-Hop/Rap finalists are: KidSyc@Brandywine (Savannah); Young R (Juliette); and MADE IN ATLANTA (Atlanta).
One winner in each genre, determined, in part, by an online public poll, will head to Hollywood to record a track at the legendary Capitol Records Tower. In addition, finalists will be featured in a television special.
The Georgia Lottery’s All Access Music Search is held in conjunction with the instant game All Access, a music-themed game loaded with cash prizes up to $25,000, over 21 million music download prizes, and a second chance to win concert or event tickets and a VIP Los Angeles music experience trip of a lifetime.
