ATLANTA – A Colorado woman has pinched a plentiful prize from the Georgia Lottery during a recent visit to the Peach State.
Judith Newcomb of Golden, Colo., matched the first five winning numbers from the Aug. 29 Powerball drawing, winning a $1 million prize.
The lucky winner claimed her prize Oct. 9 at Georgia Lottery headquarters in Atlanta.
“I’m filled with thankfulness, gratefulness,” said Newcomb, 69. “I’m extremely grateful.”
Although she has no immediate plans for her winnings, Newcomb recalled the moment she realized that she’d won, describing it as “special.”
“I was in total disbelief,” she said. “Marty, my husband, is the one who checked my ticket.”
On the day she purchased her ticket, Newcomb declared that she’d win the lottery.
“I bought the ticket and put it in my billfold,” she recalled.
Newcomb was in Georgia visiting her 96-year-old mother when she purchased her Powerball ticket.
Swifti Serve, 2002 Alabama Ave. S. in Bremen, sold the winning Quik Pik ticket.
Winning numbers from the Aug. 29 Powerball drawing were: 18-21-25-28-29 and the Powerball was 16.
Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot is at an estimated $90 million to a single annuity winner.
Powerball tickets are $2 per play.
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Powerball will benefit education in the state of Georgia.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $16.7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.7 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.4 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
