ATLANTA – For the first time ever, a U.S. jackpot has reached the billion-dollar mark. The jackpot for Wednesday’s Powerball has surged to a whopping $1.4 billion after no tickets matched all five winning numbers and the Powerball number in Saturday’s record drawing.
Georgia Lottery players won big Saturday. One player won $1 million by matching the first five numbers but not the Powerball number. The lucky ticket was purchased at Simonton Shell, 920 New Hope Road, Lawrenceville.
Sixteen Georgia Lottery players won $50,000 each Saturday. Winning tickets were purchased in: Athens, Atlanta, Buford, Dalton, Duluth, Griffin, Hull, Jacksonville, Kennesaw, LaGrange, Macon, Marietta, Moultrie, Riverdale, and Union Point. One winning $50,000 ticket was purchased on www.galottery.com.
Georgia’s students are also big winners. Since Powerball began rolling Nov. 7, the jackpot has generated an estimated $26.9 million for Georgia Lottery-funded Pre-K and HOPE Scholarships.
Winning numbers from Saturday’s drawing were: 16-19-32-34-57 and the Powerball was 13.
The Powerball jackpot began rolling Nov. 7 and has rolled 19 times.
Powerball offers two jackpot payment options: the $1.4 billion jackpot prize paid over 29 years in 30 graduated payments; or the cash option, which is approximately $868 million.
Powerball tickets are $2 per play. For an additional $1 per play, players can increase non-jackpot prizes with the Power Play option.
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Powerball will benefit education in the state of Georgia.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $17 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.7 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.4 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
