ATLANTA – An Auburn resident is celebrating his third Georgia Lottery win in just over two years. David Wayne Sharpton recently played $300 Million Gold Rush and won a $2.5 million top prize. “I looked at the ticket and said, ‘No way.’ You can’t describe the feeling,” Sharpton explained. Sharpton, 54, won $1 million playing $300 Million Gold Rush in April 2006. He won $350,000 on the instant game Vegas Nights in September 2004. Sharpton’s work as a restaurant equipment repair technician requires him to travel frequently. When on the road, he occasionally purchases a few lottery tickets for entertainment. After the first win, Sharpton paid bills, bought a new truck and paid for his niece’s wedding. With the second win, he began saving for retirement. When he saw that he won a third time, Sharpton called his wife, Pamela, and said, “I think I’m going to retire.” G & S Shop, 669-C Atlanta Hwy. S.E. in Winder, sold the lucky $2.5 million ticket. He purchased his previous winning tickets in Auburn and Monroe. Sharpton and his wife have four children and five grandchildren. “I’ve been in the right place at the right time. I’m very fortunate,” Sharpton shared. “I have wonderful children, wonderful grandchildren, a wonderful job and a wonderful life so far. It’s just a great time to be alive for many, many reasons.” Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $8.6 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Prekindergarten Program. More than 900,000 students have received HOPE Scholarships, and more than 700,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program. Play Responsibly – It's All About Fun!
