ATLANTA – A brimming Georgia Lottery prize has brewed for an Albany office pool. Eleven co-workers in the tech service department at the MillerCoors Brewery collectively won a $1 million prize from matching the first five winning numbers from the June 9 Powerball drawing.
The prize was split among the 11 winners Wednesday at the Georgia Lottery District Office in Tifton.
“We’ve been playing for about five months,” said office pool member Claude Strickland, speaking on behalf of the group. “Every time the jackpot gets up to $80 million we get our pool going.”
Winning numbers from the June 9 Powerball drawing were: 18-22-45-56-57 and the Powerball was 27.
Strickland purchased the Quik Pik ticket at Thrift Food Mart, 2401 N. Brierwood Drive in Albany.
Winners of the office pool are Clarence McNeal Jr. and Allen Chester Jr. of Dawson; Clarence Brown, Warren Lyles, Claude Strickland, Larry Gooden and Donald Talley of Albany; William Walker, Timothy Stafford, Dennis Starcher and Ernest Speir of Leesburg.
“We’ve always talked about winning,” Strickland explained. “It feels good. It made us holler ‘whoopee!’”
According to Strickland, several in the pool intend to save their winnings, pay off bills and vacation this summer.
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Powerball will benefit education in the state of Georgia.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $13.4 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
