ATLANTA – An Augusta man is thanking his lucky stars since winning a half-million dollar prize playing the Georgia Lottery. John Wells, 56, won a $500,000 top prize playing the instant game Black Pearls.
Wells said he selected the ticket on a whim at Lake Pantry, 2177 Broad St. in Augusta, minutes before the store closed for the evening.
“I scratched it in the store and thought I was seeing things,” he said. “I told my wife, and at first, she didn’t believe me.”
He and his wife, Rena, are excited to win the prize.
“I want to pay off my bills and my car note,” said Wells, who works as a housekeeping aid at a local medical center. “Winning feels fantastic!”
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $13.1 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
